4 yachts – 3 sailing and a pleasure yacht possibly a powerboat were damaged during a fire while moored at Pontoon B, Mgarr Marina, Gozo.
The fire is believed to have started from the pleasure yacht (possibly a powerboat) and flames quickly spread to the mainsail of a sailing yacht with the consequences that other neighbouring boats were caught in flames after 0330 hrs on Friday 26th June, 2020.
Two men – one aged 29 from Mellieħa and the other 34 years from Għajnsielem, Gozo were hurt in the fire due to smoke inhalation ( Smoke inhalation occurs when you breathe in harmful smoke particles and gases. Inhaling harmful smoke can inflame your lungs and airway, causing them to swell and block oxygen. This can lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome and respiratory failure ). Both were taken to Gozo General Hospital by a medical team which was called on site.
Various fire tenders were on site from the Gozitan Civil Protection Department with the help of civilian water trucks and also tugboat SEA SALVOR was on site of which she left Valletta at 0503 hrs. She returned back to Grand Harbour at 0849 hrs.
