On Wednesday 14th February, around 1630 hrs, few minutes before her departure the cruise liner MSC WORLD EUROPA reported that a male soul fell overboard while she was still berthed at Pinto 1 and 2 wharf.
Immediately a securite VHF message was issued with AFM with CPD informed.
At 1633 hrs Pilot Boat FOXTROT reported to VTS that the person was recovered by a liferaft from the liner though seemed to be in unconscious position.
At 1712 hrs from Harbour Pilot embarked reported to Valletta VTS that patient is underway to Mater Dei Hospital via ambulance and waiting for orders since an inquiry was due by the Magistrate.
The man was certified dead a short time later, he was 74 years old.
At 1950 hrs the liner ordered pilot again.
At 2022 hrs Duty Pilot with another junior pilot reported aboard with over 6,000 passengers with next port as Barcelona, Spain.
She passed breakwaters at 2041 hrs.
