2 firefighters were confirmed dead after the Grimaldi conro ship GRANDE COSTA D’AVORIO caught fire at the Port of Newark in New Jersey late Wednesday, 5th July, 2023.
Firefighters were dispatched around 2130 hrs local time for a report of multiple vehicles on fire on board the 2011 Croatian built ship that arrived from Baltimore carrying over 5,000 cars (CEU). Several of them were injured during an effort to extinguish the blaze. Two were initially unaccounted for and later confirmed dead.
The fire, which could be seen from a distance as smoke billowed out from the vessel, was put out by 2330 hours.
Grimaldi said it is yet not known how the fire started. No fuel spill has been reported and the ship’s stability does not appear to be compromised. The vessel has 28 crewmembers and is carrying over 1.200 rolling units as well as 157 containers. The company assured that there are no electric cars or hazardous cargo on board.
