The 2000 built 106 metres long cable layer RESPONDER sank on the afternoon of September 12th Seoul time, west of southern tip of Tsushima island in East China sea off South Korea. The ship went down after more than 12 hour long firefighting and rumours are around stating that the sinking was caused due to the flooding.
All 60 souls on board were evacuated to a nearby smaller cable laying ship, which was working in pair with the RESPONDER. There were no injuries or casualties and the fire broke out early in the morning of September 11th, Seoul time. The fire was extinguished by, among others, Korean SAR and coast guard ships.
Built in 2000 by Volkswerft Shipyard in Germany, the RESPONDER sailed under South Korean flag and managed by subsea cables services firm KT Submarine. She was built as the MAERSK RESPONDER trading until 2016.
