What was the first fishing catch for the crew of the wooden fishing vessel NUOVA ISIDE earlier this week after the COVID-19 emergency, it finished into a disaster with the fishing vessel missing and a lifeless body was found by Guardia Costiera CP 300 Class.
3 were aboard – Capt Matteo Lo Iacono of 53 years and his son Vito of 26 years old and the cousin Giuseppe of 35 years (Corpse Found). They left the small port of Terrasini, Palermo for a fishing trip between Tuesday 12th May and Wednesday 13th May. The wind was reaching 50 knots from the southeast.
The last vhf radio contact with their families was around 0200 hrs on Wednesday 13th with a following radio silence which prompted the authorities to start SAR Operations after reports that none of them returned home. The fishing boat disappeared between Capo San Vito and Ustica.
Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations are in due course with marine units of Guardia Costiera and Guardia Di Finanza, AW139 of Guardia Costiera and 15th Wing of Aeronautica Militare based at Birgi Base.
