On Sunday 7th April, 2002 the Civil Protection Department (CPD) fireboat GARIBALDI entered Grand Harbour, Malta towing a capsized 11 metre sailing catamaran NOMADE that capsized on Wednesday 27th March in rough weather around 37 miles offshore Malta with her French male solo crew that was rescued by the 1975 built Cypriot flag cargo ship PUMA and was taken to Piraeus, Greece.

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) assumed that the catamaran had sunk. However, she turned up again and on Saturday 6th April she was spotted by the 1983 built ore bulk/oil (OBO) PHAROS, off L-Ahrax, Mellieha. A helicopter was dispatched together with Swift Class Patrol Craft P 23 which had a hard time towing the catamaran back to shore because of the swell.
She was then joined by the CPD Fireboat GARIBALDI which completed the towing operation.

NOMADE was lifted on her hull hard at Oil Wharf, Vittoriosa.
