One of 3 floating docks operated by the Italian Navy or Marina Militare Italiana (MMI) – GO 53 sank in her place sitting on the seabed without injuries at Arsenale Militare, Augusta, Sicily during July 2024.
The Marina Militare Arsenale of Augusta is located in the north-eastern area of the Augusta harbour and is divided into two sites: San Giuseppe and Pantano Danieli of which occupies an area of 3.3 hectares on the northern side of the harbour and hosts the mooring area for the 3 floating docks – GO 53, GO 58 and GO 59, some warehouses/depots; in the same area there are the warehouses of competence of the Navy’s supply management centre.
GO 53 is the second unit of a class of 3 and was built at Cantiere Navale Ferrari, La Spezia, Italy with yard number 75 laid down in 1989 and commissioned in 1993.
She’s 152.40 m long (loa) with 29.6m beam and draft of 14.70 m with height as 12.40 m. Lifting Capacity is 6,000 ts.

MMI announced that during routine handling activities including preparations to welcoming a naval unit in the coming days, the floating dock GO 53 suffered technical problems of which they are still being identified, an excessive burdening of the basin occurred. Therefore in order to guarantee the safety of the personnel of the adjacent floating docks and the protection of the structures on land, it was necessary to lower the dock more to the seabed.”
As for the current situation MMI stated that the edge of the dock “is surfacing and the systems are in a safe condition “, confirming that no injuries to souls has been recorded “, while ” as a precautionary measure, the use of anti-pollution booms has been ordered near the floating dock.
