On Wednesday 13th June, 2012 the Armed Forces of Malta’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC Malta) at Luqa Barracks received a distress call from a Maltese fishing vessel, whilst she was in a position some 40 nautical miles north of the Italian island of Linosa.
The 22 metre fishing trawler MFA 0009 MIKELE ROSARIA, distress was that she had water ingress around 1800 hrs while she was in Italian territorial waters, and the Italian MRCC centre in Rome was duly informed. Given the good cooperation between the two rescue centres on similar incidents, MRCC Rome assumed co-ordination of the rescue mission.
Consequently, an Italian Coast-Guard (Guardia Costiera) marine unit was dispatched by the Italian authorities, where with their assistance the fishing trawler MIKELE ROSARIA was safely escorted to the Linosa port at 2036 hrs.
