In the evening of Saturday 22nd March, 2025 the 2003 built BHS flag 42 m research vessel FUGRO MERCATOR ran aground on Saturday evening, March 22, on the reef of the Enfola promontory, near Portoferraio on the island of Elba (Livorno).
She was sheltering from the current bad weather happening in the Mediterranean Sea, and would have drifted too close to the coast, of which the Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) rescued all 11 crew members after the accident caused water ingress which was initially contained by the crew, which subsequently damaged part of the engines, causing a total blackout of the on-board equipment.
