The sixth ship from a class of twelve hybrid vessels of the innovative Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) class the ECO MALTA was christened at Grand Harbour while she was berthed at Laboratory Wharf during her second voyage to Malta.

She was delivered last March and the 3rd GG5G vessel seen in Valletta, first one ECO LIVORNO on 30th April, 2021 – https://maltashipnews.com/2021/05/02/conro-news-grimaldis-hybrid-roro-eco-livorno-at-malta-30-04-2021/ and ECO CATANIA on 26th July, 2021 – https://maltashipnews.com/2021/08/25/conro-news-grimaldis-hybrid-roro-eco-catania-at-malta-26-07-2021/

Whilst in Harbour Calls, the vessel is capable of reducing emissions to zero by using the electricity stored in mega lithium batteries with a total power of 5 MWh which are recharged during navigation thanks to shaft generators and 350 m2 of solar panels. The vessel is also equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system for the reduction of sulphur and particulate emissions.

Being here in Malta today for this special occasion, or to christen the largest and most sustainable ship in the world, is a source of great pride for us,’ said Eugenio Grimaldi, Executive Director of the Grimaldi Group. ‘We have been present in Malta for more than sixty years and this event marks an important milestone for the maritime and transport industry locally, as well as throughout the Mediterranean.’

Archbishop of Malta Monsignor Charles Jude Scicluna then proceeded to bless the ECO MALTA. The christening climaxed with the cutting of the ribbon by the vessel’s Godmother and Malta’s First Lady Miriam Vella, and the traditional breaking of the bottle.

ECO MALTA received salute from the 2020 built tug SENGLEA which gave a water display from her fire-fighting monitors.

Capt. Lawrence Dalli, CEO of Malta Ship Photos was honored to be invited for the christening ceremony
