One of the former naval vessels that was given a second life, converted as a small hospital ship ISLAND REACH is the former Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service (RMAS) Clovelly Class Fleet Tender RMAS MELTON A 83.

She passed breakwaters on Tuesday 22nd October at 1129 hrs coming from Malaga, Spain and while approaching Malta she navigated  West of Gozo, crossing Comino Channel.

She was Purchased by Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Switzerland during December 2021 and went through conversion of new additional accommodation on the fore deck and create dental and ophthalmic suites, plus a GP and pharmacy facilities in the main hold, before being sent to serve the medical needs of Madagascar.

She was built at East Yorkshire, UK by Richard Dunston (Hessle) Ltd for the Ministry of Defence as the RMAS MELTON A 83 commissioned in 1981 and decommissioned in 2008.

The Clovelly class fleet tenders, also known as the Cartmel class, are a class of Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service boats built between 1967 and 1982. The class was named after villages and small towns in Great Britain.

They were mainly used as fleet tenders for the conveyance of passengers and stores to Royal Navy (RN) and Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) but there were other derivatives some operated by the RNXS, Sea Cadet Corps etc.

She was berthed at St.Angelo Wharf, part of Grand Harbour Marina (GHM) for uplifting bunkers.
