A GANTRY CRANE is a crane built atop a gantry, which is a structure used to straddle an object or workspace. Ship-to-shore gantry cranes are imposing, multi-story structures prominent at most container terminals, used to load intermodal containers on and off container ships. They operate along two rails (waterside and landside designations) spaced based on the size of crane to be used.
At Grand Harbour, Malta we had 2 Gantry Cranes at the same berthing facility that is Laboratory Wharf. The first one was Yellow coloured and after it was dismantled it was used to build a film prop hull with it and the second one manufactured in France by the famous Caillard in 1986.
Among Caillard’s main customers were the Autonomous Port of Le Havre, major shipping companies, major industrial companies, and the French railways, which use a 50-tonne emergency crane that can be attached to fast trains.
French ports including Dunkirk, Calais, Boulogne, Dieppe, Rouen, Brest, Lorient, Paris, Bayonne, Nantes and La Rochelle use high-speed port cranes and boom balancing systems manufactured by Caillard and on 21st December, 2001 it closed doors.
