The largest catamaran in the world, the TUR flag and owned KARADENIZ LIFESHIP RAUF BEY owned since October 2015 by Karadeniz Holding, has been converted into an accommodation center with capacity for a minimum of 1,500 people and since April of this year, she has been docked in Iskenderun,Turkey temporarily housing some two thousand victims after the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria.

 

The first of a series of three ships of the HSS 1500 project built in Rauma (Finland) on behalf of Stena Line, in February 1996 she began her operational life named  STENA EXPLORER  on the Holyhead-Dun Laohgaire line, which alternated with a season in the Belfast-Stranraer line.

Of 19,638 gross tons and 1,500 deadweight tons, she’s 126.60 metres long (loa) with 40 m beam  and 4.80 m  draft. She is powered by four General Electric gas turbines –two LM2500 and two LM1600–, which have a total power of 78,000 kw and allow her to maintain a speed of 40 knots. Passenger capacity is for 1,500 souls and 375 cars or 100 cars and 50 trucks or trailers.
