On Saturday 24th August, 2019 the 1961 built former fishing vessel ELEONORE started her first rescue mission in the Mediterranean Sea.

Two days later on Monday 26th August rescued 104 distressed migrants off the Libyan coast from a sinking rubber boat. Most of them were transferred on board by the ship’s RHIB, some had to be taken off directly as time ran out. A Libyan Coastguard patrol craft threatened the crew and closed in until 50 meters. Finally all could be pulled aboard.

On Wednesday 28th August ELEONORE made contact with the Maltese Authorities and it was rejected for the disembarkation of 104 rescued migrants. The ship had made two requests to enter Malta but both had been refused. In addition to refusing the ship to enter its ports, the Maltese authorities had also denied the ship permission for provisions of food and water. A government spokesperson said that the vessel was free to receive supplies outside territorial waters if it wished to do so.

On Monday 2nd September the Captain Claus-Peter Reisch declared an emergency due to a life threatening situation on board, and ran into the Sicilian port of Pozzallo accompanied by the Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) . This, however, was contrary to the instructions of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, and the ELEONORE was then confiscated by the Italian police.

Last year she was spotted laid up at Porto Xiphonio, Augusta  as per below image –
