Today Thursday 23rd March, 2023 the Italian Coast Guard (Guardia Costiera) rescued 450 illegal immigrants aboard a fishing vessel flying a Libyan Flag on her bow 100 miles east of Siracusa under the coordination or RCC Catania.

The fishing vessel , in precarious navigable conditions, was reached and rescued by the Diciotti Class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) CP 906 ORESTE CORSI with CP 301 Class lifeboat CP 325.

The  Aframax 2007 built crude oil tanker MINERVA LIBRA; another Greek owned tanker KRITI RUBY and the 2007 built bulker FOX together with the Romania Border Police Patrol Craft MAI 1106 part of  Frontex Mission  also were in area  for assistance.

Previously, starting from the early hours of this morning, Italian Coast Guard units had intervened in favor of a fishing boat with many migrants on board in the Italian SAR area of ​​responsibility and in particular about 90 miles from the Calabrian Ionian coast. In the operation, coordinated by the Reggio Calabria Coast Guard, 295 migrants were rescued. The rescued people were recovered and transported to safety on three Coast Guard patrol boats.
