The ONLY Syrian Navy Ship that called at Malta was the cadet training ship AL ASSAD during July 1994 berthing at Crucifix Wharf now Pinto Wharf.
The Syrian Navy, officially the Syrian Arab Navy (Arabic: الْبَحْرِيَّةُ الْعَرَبِيَّةُ السُّورِيَّةُ, romanized: al-Baḥrīyah al-ʿArabīyah as-Sūrīyah), is the navy branch of the Syrian Armed Forces. The main role of the Syrian Navy is to defend the country’s coasts and ensure the security of the territorial waters of Syria. The Coastal Defense Forces and the Syrian Marines have been attached to the Navy since the late 20th century. The Syrian navy is a relatively small navy with only 4,000 sailors, in addition to 2,500 reservists and 1,500 marines. It is under the Syrian Army’s Latakia regional command with its fleet based in the ports of Baniyas, Latakia, Minet el-Beida, and Tartus. It is the smallest part of the Syrian Armed Forces.
Built at Gdansk, Poland by Northern Shipyard in 1988 as the roro ship AL KHALED which only traded for 12 months, she had a dual role of training future naval personnel and acting as a landing ship for the Syrian Naval Infantry, which then disembark and make their way to the coast in dinghies.
And recently during Israel Defence Forces (IDF) attacks on various Syrian Fleet installations on Monday 9th December, 2024 via naval and air assets she was seen in various images still afloat. An article was issued too, read more here – https://maltashipphotos.com/naval-news-syrian-navy-ships-destroyed-at-lattakia-syria-by-israel-defence-forces-09-12-2024/
