In 2021, the Flemish marine construction company Herbosch-Kiere, signed a contract for the installation of 3 x 66 kV submarine cables in shallow waters between Bahrain’s mainland and Hawar Island. The multi-purpose, self-propelled vessel ATLANTIS will carry out the works for Al-Gihaz Contracting, a Saudi Arabian construction company. The works start in February 2022 and will take around 3 months to complete.

The overall project was awarded by Bahrain’s Electricity & Water Authority (EWA) and includes the design, production, transport, installation, jointing and testing of submarine and underground 66 kV cables. This contract was awarded to Al-Gihaz Company Limited and has a value of 126.5 million dollars (112 million euros).

The three 3-core 66 kV XLPE submarine cables with built-in fibre optic cables will be installed between the landing stations on the Mainland and the landing stations on the Hawar Islands side, approximately 25km. Because the self-propelled DP1 vessel ATLANTIS has a limited draught, she is ideal for carrying out this type of shallow water work, Herbosch-Kiere has successfully carried out in the past. This agreement strengthens Herbosch-Kiere’s position as a reliable and experienced partner for cable installations.”
