Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards have added a warship capable of carrying aircraft, missile launchers and drones to her naval fleet, state media said on Thursday 19th November, at a time of high tension between Tehran and Washington. Tension between Tehran and Washington has risen since 2018, when President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from world powers’ 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy.
IRIS SHAHID ROUDAKI L110-1 was commissioned on Thursday 19th November, 2020. She looks like a former ro/ro ship modified for military purposes and is capable of carrying all types of aircrafts, drones, missiles and radar systems.
In the footage of commissioning ceremony, a Bell 412 helicopter, four speedboats, six Ababil-2 drones, a Sevom Khordad TELAR and eight anti-ship cruise missiles in four twin container launchers (possibly of Ghader or Ghadir type) were spotted on her deck
Guards navy commander Ali Reza Tangsiri told state TV that the warship would provide security for “maritime transportation lines, oil tankers, commercial and fishing fleets on the high seas.”
