A type of ship which is not seen much around the Maltese Islands is an ore-bulk-oil carrier, also known as OBO. She’s a ship designed to be capable of carrying wet or dry cargoes. The idea is to reduce the number of ballast condition voyages, in which large ships only carry a cargo one way and return empty for another.
One of the OBO’s that called at Malta was the South Korean built 242 metres long GENMAR SPIRIT which called at Grand Harbour bound to Malta Shipyards assisted by 3 TugMalta tugs FELICA, LIENI and SEA SALVOR on Tuesday 31st March 2005.
She was built in March 1992 at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in Ulsan at South Korea as the SCANOBO SPIRIT trading for few days where she was bought to Norwegian interests and renamed SKS SPIRIT. In 1995 she was sold again and renamed SCF SPIRIT lasting for 6 years since she was sold and renamed as GENMAR SPIRIT trading for 5 Golden Years until April 2006.
On Wednesday 22nd June, 2005 she was spotted berthed at Boiler Wharf.
And on Thursday 23rd June 2005 she left Grand Harbour from Malta Shipyards at French Creek with fresh hull coating.
She was sold again and traded as CALM SEA until broken up in 2012.
