Last Saturday 16th December, the Indian Navy stated that it was shadowing the Bulgarian-managed bulk carrier that was boarded by unknown attackers, likely Somali pirates 380 miles East of the Yemeni island of Socotra in the Arabian Sea. The 2016 built RUEN homeported at Valletta (MLT Flag) with a multinational crew, of whom 8 are Bulgarian, sent a Mayday message on the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations portal on December 14th indicating that six unknown people had boarded the vessel. The Indian Navy responded by sending its anti-piracy patrol warship and maritime patrol aircraft to locate and assist the vessel. RUEN managed by Bulgarian shipping company Navibulgar, was off the Yemeni island of Socotra when she was boarded.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Navy Santa Maria Class Frigate ESPS VICTORIA F 82 is racing towards the bulker RUEN. She’s part of EUNAVFOR – Operation Atalanta, formally European Union Naval Force Somalia, that is an ongoing counter-piracy military operation .
