Pirates kidnapped eight crew members of the general cargo ship MARMALAITA during a raid on August 14th off the coast of Cameroon, Hamburg based owner said on Friday August 16th.

“It is with deep regret and great concern to inform that our vessel MarMalaita was attacked by pirates yesterday August 14th between 2300 and 2400 hrs local time on the anchorage of Douala / Cameroon”, the company said, adding that eight of the 12 crew members were abducted.

“We have assembled our emergency response team and are doing utmost to deal with the case, in cooperation with all relevant authorities and crew managers. Our thoughts reach out to the concerned families, and we will take all efforts to support and assist them until their seafarers safely return back home. All respective authorities have been informed accordingly and we will fully cooperate with them until the case is resolved”, the company said.

MARMALAITA was built in Yichang, China by Damen Yichang Shipyard in 2002 and homeported at Saint John’s with ATG flag.
