Port Colborne is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located on Lake Erie, at the southern end of the Welland Canal, in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario. The original settlement, known as Gravelly Bay, dates from 1832 and was renamed after Sir John Colborne, a British war hero and the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada at the time of the opening of the (new) southern terminus of the First Welland Canal in 1833.
There were 3 interesting ship movements in August, 2021 –
Monday 2nd August – Superyacht SCOUT that was built by Hakvoort, Netherlands as yard no 249 and delivered in April, 2019. She’s 63.72 metres long (loa) with 11.60 metres beam and maximum draught of 3.30 metres. Her GRT is 1,416 tons while her deadweight (DWT) is 204 tons. Powered by 2 Caterpillar C18 Diesel Engines with 4 Stroke 6 cylinder and cruising speed of 12 knots.
Sunday 22nd August – 2016 built cement carrier NACC CAPRI homeported at St. Catherines, ON (CAN). She was built in China by Ningbo Xinie Shipbuilding Co Ltd with yard no as XL-162 ordered in October 2015, launched on 21st September 2016 and was commissioned on 20th November 2016. She passed through the Welland Canal.
Also the 2000 built tugboat THEODORE TOO based on the fictional television tugboat character Theodore Tugboat was spotted passing the Welland Canal. She was built by Snyder’s Shipyard in Dayspring, Nova Scotia, on the Lahave River, not far from Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
Both Wheelhouse and the hull are made entirely of wood, with a fibreglass hat and smokestack. She has a ‘face’ on the wheelhouse, with large realistic hydraulic eyes which are no longer operational. The boat displays a number of prop details such as winches and towing bitts inspired from real tugs but operates as a tour boat, not as a real tugboat.
