Founded in 1896, the International Transport Workers Federation better known as ITF is a confederation of 500 transport workers unions in 125 countries, representing 5 million workers in every branch of transport.

During March 1998 a former Bank Line ship was purchased for $3 million and refurbished for a worldwide tour to raise public awareness of horrific conditions for the world’s seafarers on what are known as “flag-of-convenience” ships renaming her as GLOBAL MARINER. She was built in 1979 by Sunderland Shipbuilders Ltd at Sunderland, UK as the RUDDBANK of Andrew Weir & Co., London. She was bought by Lambert and Holt Line in 1983 and was renamed ROMNEY, becoming the LAIRD in 1986 and the NAPIER STAR in 1989. In 1991 the ship was sold by the Vesty group to Hong Kong owners and renamed TAMAPATCHAREE and in 1995 she became the LADY REBECCA by new Hong Kong owners.

The maiden voyage for the GLOBAL MARINER with 35 crew started in July 1999 and left London on an 18-month worldwide tour with stops at over 60 major ports which included Valletta, Malta berthing at Pinto 3 Wharf, VISET (now Valletta Cruise Port).
