One of the Turkish built tankers trading around is the 1996 built 76.6 m long oil products tanker MERSEY SPIRIT. She’s a former Danish tanker from the Herning Shipping A/S  of which in Malta we still have one from 2 operating with a local shipping company.

She was built at Rota Shipyard at Tuzla, Turkey with yard no 16 as ILONA THERESA trading until February 1996 of which was renamed as DENSA GUNDEM trading for 6 years and and renamed again as JETTE THERESA of which she was sold by her then owner Herning for $3.50m during April 2007 and renamed as ONYX.

On 16th May 2012  she was detained in Liverpool for a total of eleven deficiencies including one grounds for detention. At the time she was one of twelve non-UK flagged vessels detained in UK ports. She was detained because there  were a number of deficiencies which were objective evidence of a serious  failure  or lack of effectiveness of implementation of the ISM code on board the vessel. Annual surveys had not been carried out for International Air Pollution  Prevention, International Oil Pollution Prevention, Load Line, Cargo Ship Safety  Construction, Cargo Ship Safety Equipment and Annual Class Survey. Other  deficiencies included the bow thruster ventilation pipe was corroded through in several sections; the Civil Liability for Bunker Pollution Certificate was  missing and the rescue boat searchlight was not approved.

And a year later she was sold to an Italian company and renamed as MERSEY SPIRIT, homeported at Napoli (ITA Flag).

On Thursday 18th January, 2024 at 1826 hrs she entered Marsaxlokk Harbour, Malta bound to EVOS Terminal to berth at Jetty 3 for loading 1,700 metric tons (mt) of Fuel Oil (FO). She left the following day at 1208 hrs bound to Augusta, Sicily spending nearly 18 hours at Malta.

All images of MERSEY SPIRIT are taken at Augusta, Sicily back to Thursday 11th January, 2024.
